About This Item
[Worcester: Stanbrook Abbey Press, 1960].. Quarto broadside (26.5 x 19.5 cm), printed in blue on WSH handmade paper and tipped into light tan paper folder. With accompaniments as below. Near fine. An overprinting of this leaf (from THE PATH TO PEACE) in part for the author's use, as four copies turned up when his library was dispersed). As it appears in the book, it is printed in a fashion out of character with the rest of the text. In the corner of the back panel of the folder appears the following manuscript notation, in ink: "© From: the Path to Peace [/] Siegfried Sassoon [/] SAP" followed in a different color ink by "And given by Dame [/] Hildelith." Accompanied by the quarto [4]pp. leaflet prospectus for PATH ... (printing two poems), accompanied. by three lightly used quarto proof leaves, printing six poems: "The Contention," "The Need," "Unfoldment," "Arbor Vitae," "Rogation," and "Sight Sufficient." And finally, accompanied by two proof printings of poems ("Before a Crucifix," and "A Prayer in Old Age'), on folded 15 x 24 cm sheet of proofing paper, each initialed 'SS' in ink below last line, the sheet inscribed on the verso in ink: "A rough pull of 2 of his last 4 poems," likely in the hand of the printer, Dame Hildelith, principal of the press. Sassoon entered into the Catholic Church on August 14, 1957, without informing his wife, son or friends. In 1959 he formed a close friendship with Dame Felicitas Corrigan, a Benedictine of Stanbrook Abbey, and those associated with the press agreed to the publication of the collection. KEYNES A62a(ref).
