About This Item
Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper, later renamed Leslie's Illustrated Weekly Newspaper, was an American illustrated literary and news magazine founded in 1855 and published until 1922. It was one of several magazines started by publisher and illustrator Frank Leslie. Throughout its existence, the weekly provided illustrations and reports—first with wood engravings and daguerreotypes, later with more advanced forms of photography—of wars from John Brown's raid at Harper's Ferry and the Civil War until the Spanish-American War and the First World War. Surviving issues today are highly prized as collectors' items for vividly depicting American life during the seven decades of its existence. Many distinguished writers were featured in its pages.
This copy of Leslie's Illustrated Weekly Newspaper, John A. Sleicher, Editor, was published by the Leslie-Judge Company of New York on September 9th, 1915 – in the middle of the First World War. The issue, which measures approximately 11 inches wide by 14 inches tall, contains 24 pages (numbered 251 to 274) of text, illustrations and advertisements, all wrapped in paper covers. The covers are semi-detached from the body of the issue and are chipped along the edges. The pages show light tanning with occasional edge-chipping. The overall condition of the item is good.
The cover illustration is Howard Chandler Christy's "Fate Tracing New Boundaries". Recognizing that the issue was published during World War I, some of the articles are Fighting on the Serbian Frontier, Naval Unpreparedness, Speaking of Peace, and Our Underpaid Consuls.
The illustrations accompanying this description show the Front Cover, the first page of the issue containing the table of Contents, and three (3) typical 2-page spreads of articles.
