About This Item
The inscription is thought to be by The Reverend Henry Whitehead and gifted to Cecilia Robert Lady of Carlisle. Henry Whitehead was the assistant curator of St. Luke's Soho during the 1854 Cholera outbreak and subsequently worked with John Snow and helped him track down the source of the outbreak. In 1874 he moved to Brampton Cumbria home of Cecilia Roberts and became instrumental in the movement to build the Phillip Webb St. Martin's Church in Brampton, Presumably the book was gifted some time between 1874 and 1884 when he left the parish. Handling wear to the cover, bumping to the corners and spine, rubbing to the boards, some splitting along the top of the back and front hinge, an inscription on the from end-papers and pages 250-270 are very loose having lost 3 of the strings in the binding. The contents are clean, bright and free from markings or inscriptions.
