About This Item
HM Stationery Office, 1945 What does one do with these small but fascinating pieces of WW2 ephemera? I cannot bear to simply throw it away. It was inside a family letter, and let me describe it; it is a single folded card, beige coloured, with black printing. The cover says 'LETTER No. 3 BY THE COMMANDER-IN-CHIEF ON FRATERNISATION'. Under this heavy type title is a shield with the cross of St. George, surmounted by crossed swords. Inside is a two page spread, headlined 'TO ALL MEMBERS OF THE BRITISH FORCES IN GERMANY' and a four paragraph message follows, concerning the de-Nazification of the British Zone. It is signed (printed signature) 'Montgomery Field Marshal, Commander -in-Chief, British Zone.' It is dated '14 July 45.' And that is it. Uncreased, amazingly well preserved.
