About This Item

London. Printed for Longman, Hurst, Rees and Orme. 1809. 22.5cm, the first edition, [xiii],406p. engraved folding frontis map, folding tables, rebound in grey paper over boards and paper label, heavy foxing throughout, the folds have all been guarded in an early non-acid repair tape (no bleed through), a good sound working copy.(cdn). Lande 281. Morgan p160. Gagnon I-1548. Sabin 28393. Story p679. ' Waterston p24. Gray stayed in Quebec City and Montreal. His letters cover three years travel in pursuit of business and social pleasures. He writes dramatically of the fine air of winter at Montmorency and Chaudiere Falls; sleighs and wagons on ice, the dog sledges on country roads. Gray also describes a emerging intellectual life, politics in the Assemblies and a first growth of journals in Lower Canada. He created controversy by including remarks about British fears that a French army could march into Lower Canada from the United States and be welcomed by the French Canadians. But he reassures potential visitors or immigrants: If not a land abounding in all the luxuries and elegancies of life is undeniably a land of peace and plenty.
