Lieutenant Lawrence arrived in France midway through the great Battle of the Somme. Although he was spared the catastrophe of July 1st he was not to escape the further horrors of the First World War. He saw action with the Grenadier Guards at Combles, Saillisel, Gueudecourt, the Ypres Canal and Boesinge. In this latter action, Lawrence was in the front line when a German shell exploded, killing many around him and leaving him with a serious shoulder wound. His letters span the two years of his service with the Grenadier Guards and recall the misery, unpleasantness and horror of day to day life in the trenches, of gas attacks, heavy shelling and of encounters with the 'Bosche'.
