About This Item

London, England: Published by the Author at the Egyptian Hall, Piccadilly, 1841. Second State. Leather-bound. Near Fine. George Catlin. Quartos. Recent brick-red half-morocco over marbled boards (10" x 6 3/4"). Title page reads "With four hundred illustrations carefully engraved from his original paintings", but because some are missing (Howes notes which, with at least one instance of four drawm figures on one page being accorded four separate plate numbers, as well as several added -- pl. 110 1/2, for example), and several unnumbered -- perhaps the frontis and folding map -- the count as 309. Three maps, one foldout. Not the first impression, since the error reading "Frederick" instead of "Zedekiah" is not present on p.104. No errata sheet is to be found in this edition, and the drawings are all black and white.

Of this book, William Reese, in Best of The West (77) writes: "...An immediate success, it went through many editions in his lifetime. Caitlin evidently sold the copyright of the book to the London publisher Henry Bohn, in 1845..."

NOTE: Neither Wagner-Camp (84), or Wagner-Camp-Becker (84:1) mention the printer listed on the last page of text in both volumes as "W. and A.K. Johnston, Edinburgh and London". Rather, Wagner-Camp includes copy of title page upon which is stated at bottom, just below "Published by the Author...", the printer as being Tosswill and Myers, 24, Budge Row..." for the (black and white?) first and presumably subsequent impressions prior to the Second Edition which featured maps and plates AVAILABLE in color. Howes, Sabin, Streeter. Perhaps the "Printer" was a general term which intended to identify those who reproduced the engravings for this set, but the last page mention of the two Johnston printers, verily, does confuse. Howes (C241), "aa", 309 plates, "...not 312 as t-p states". (Howes); Streeter Sale.
