New York: Wiley and Putnam, 1842. Hardcover. Fair. Second edition. Two volumes. Octavos. viii, 264; viii, 266pp., illustrated with three maps (one folding) and over 300 lithographic illustrations. Early owner's name "John L. Perry" in ink on title page of Vol. 2, with his small engraved bookplate on front pastedown of Vol. 1; later owner's pictorial bookplate on front flyleaf (verso) of Vol. 1, and front pastedown of Vol. 2; final owner's name in ink on each front free endpaper (dated 1945). Both volumes re-backed with most the original backstrips laid down, boards are faded and worn at the edges and corners, Vol. 1 text block is split (between pp. 112-113), one plate in Vol. 1 is detached, else a good sound set overall with modest toning and a few small tears at the edges of the endleaves. Housed in a handsome protective clamshell case with a leather spine label. George Catlin's monumental work in North American ethnology. The American artist and anthropologist visited forty-eight native tribes on his extensive tour of the American west and executed some six hundred paintings for this work.
