RARE FIRST EDITION.

Samuel Daniel Broughton (1787-1837) was an English army surgeon who in 1812 was appointed assistant-surgeon of the 2nd Life Guards, the Regiment that fought on the Spanish peninsular against Napoleon's troops. He was present on the Iberian Peninsula and in the South of France until the end of the Peninsular War at the battle for Toulouse. Later, he was present at the battle of Waterloo. His book is a first-hand account not only of the military campaigns in which he was involved but it is also a descriptive narrative of the customs and habits of the local people with whom he came into contact. It is rich in period color making it perfect background material for this episode of the Napoleonic War.
