About This Item

London: Hodder and Stoughton, 1915. First Edition. Stiff Wrappers. Fine-. First printing of this very scarce epistolary novel. 8vo: 126,[2]pp. Original green paper embossed with crosshatch pattern and printed in red and black over stiff boards. Very slight edge wear, webbing just peaking through between pp 56-57 but binding firm with no loose pages, a gorgeous copy. A fictional collection of letters from a "real war bride." Swan was a Scottish journalist, novelist and story writer, mostly under her maiden name but also as David Lyall and later Mrs. Burnett Smith. She was a popular writer of romantic fiction and published more than 200 novels, serials, short stories and other fiction between 1878 and her death, in 1943. She was politically active throughout her life, as a suffragist, a Liberal activist, and a founder-member and vice-president of the Scottish National Party. N. B.
