About This Item

Leipzig / Bruxelles: Édition Hetzel / Alphonse Dürr [and] Édition Hetzel / Meline, Cans et Cie, 1859. Hardcover. Near Fine. First edition, mixed state? Two volumes bound in one, with both half-titles present. Octavo. 270, 20 (ads) pp. Text in French. Cloth and marbled papercovered boards with cloth tips and spine titled in silver. Spine titling tarnished else a near fine copy with modest general wear and a tiny chip on the foredge of the cover; the interior is fine. The title page of Book One gives an Édition Hetzel and Alphonse Dürr (Leipzig) imprint, and the title page of Book Two gives an Édition Hetzel and Meline, Cans et Cie (Bruxelles) imprint. Both title pages state "Édition Interdite pour la France" ("Prohibited Edition for France"). A nice copy of the first two books of Hugo's celebrated epic poem in a contemporary binding.
