1498 1ed Trithemius INCUNABULA Spiritual MYSTICISM Magic Occult Incunable Monks

Johannes Trithemius was a 15th-century German Benedictine monk who was known for his works on monastics, spiritual exercises, and occult magic. One of his most important works was first published in August 1498, 'De triplici regione claustralium et spirituali exercitio monachorum', a work written to instruct Benedictine monks on spiritual exercises.

While 'Exercitii spiritualis' was not written specifically on magic and spirit communication like his much more famous 'Steganographia', it does provide instruction on practicing mystical theology and forms of cataphatic theology (Brann). Trithemius himself states in this book:

"Mystical theology is taught by an ineffable sweetness in the mystery of the divine darkness. Having been arrayed in secret, the mind incites its pleasure through the fervor of the most holy love and is assiduously elevated to it by desire."

This first edition work was derived from a lecture given at Bursfeld on positive and negative theologies in 1497, the same year Trithemius began writing this book.

George Downing was an Irish preacher and political apologist known for his service under Oliver Cromwell in Scotland. One of the most notable discussions in this work is a report on the miserable interactions of the Dutch settlers with local Indian tribes, as well as business and trade in New York. David Porter was an early American naval captain who served on the USS Constitution and the USS Essex. While aboard the Essex, Porter faced significant hardships, including the Battle of Valparaiso where the ship was ultimately disabled. Porter kept a journal of his time aboard the Essex, a journal that was quickly published after capture of the Essex.
According to Hill, the second of Porter's 'Journal' is the "best edition" and is more complete even than the first. In fact, this edition contains the first instance of the details of Porter's loss of the USS Essex in 1814. This edition also includes an expanded preface as well as folding maps and notes and illustrations on the Galapagos Islands.

Peter Apian was a 16th-century humanist who is remembered for his studies in astronomy and mathematics. His best and most-known work was his book on cosmography which was extremely influential into the 17th-century. Other illustrations include zodiac characters, planets, maps, and navigational instruments.
