Biography of Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi, sculptor of Liberty Enlightening the World (commonly known as the Statue of Liberty), and his native Alsace-Lorraine, then "under the Prussian heel"; the author was also Alsatian, a draftee into the Kaiser's navy during the Great War, then the French afterwards, until he emigrated to America, finding in Chicago's Hull House the ideas of tolerance & freedom. Maroon hardcover, silver titling. Light wear to book, minor corner bumps; jacket shows a little rubbing, minor spine fade. Text clean; 251 pages, frontispiece dual portrait of the author in German & French naval uniforms.. First Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good/Very Good. Octavo.
