William Styron traces the betrayals and infidelities—the heritage of spite and endlessly disappointed love—that afflict the members of a Southern family and that culminate in the suicide of the beautiful Peyton Loftis.

Esteemed novelist and short story writer Richard Yates did a superb job of constructing a beautiful screenplay from Styron's brilliant, classic novel--no easy task for such an exquisitely written and subtle work. I admired the ways in which Yates condensed the story while still bringing out many of the nuances in the characterization. The main problem was that condensed into even a long screenplay, the sadness of the essential story became too dominant, the tragedy of the lives too relentless. Styron's prose added layers to the story that gave it a richness that helped the reader to endure the suffering of this ultimate dysfunctional family. It's no wonder that, although extremely skillful, this screenplay was never made into a movie.
