About This Item
Paris. : Baudry's European Library., 1836. Hardcover. Fair. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. Fair+. Binding copy. Missing one board, the other is detached. Name in contemporaneous hand neatly penned to free front endpaper verso. Lightly foxed throughout. 365pp. First single volume edition. Published the same year as the first edition in the publishers 'Collection of Ancient and Modern British Authors' series, of which this is volume CXXXIX. Trollope's anti-slavery novel is a landmark of abolitionist literature (pre-dating Uncle Tom's Cabin by 15 years and used as a reference for that text), an early example of social reform literature (pre-dating Dickens' sojourn into the genre, with Oliver Twist, by a year) and a very early example of feminist literature. As such it is arguably, not only one of Trollope's most important novels, but one of the most important and underrated novels of the 19th Century.
