London: Chapman and Hall, 86, Strand, MDCCCXXXIX., 1839. First edition. First edition in book form with illustrations by Phiz. Later issue - "latter" has not been corrected on page 160; "Chapman & Hall" imprint on a few plates prior to page 45; "visiter" has been corrected to "sister" on line 17, page 123. Includes 39 etchings. Beautifully bound in 3/4 maroon morocco with raised bands on spine and gilt lettering. Light rubbing on front board at the spine, as well as to corners, else very good without dust jacket, as issued. The tale of young Nicholas Nickleby as he struggles to seek his fortune in Victorian England. His adventures take place at Dotheboys Hall where Wackford Squeers starves and abuses children under the pretense of education.

Synopsis

Nicholas Nickleby is left responsible for his mother and sister when his father dies. The novel follows his attempt to succeed in supporting them, despite his uncle Ralph's antagonistic lack of belief in him. It is one of Dickens' early comic novels.
