XIII and XIV of the original 27-volume deluxe illustrated Library Edition of The Works of Charles Dickens, with title pages dated 1868. Publisher's original dark-green cloth binding with gilt lettering and ruling on the spine and blindstamped decorations on both covers. "Library Edition" appears in gilt at bottom edge of spine with no volume number. Brown smooth-coated endpapers. xviii + 435 and x + 430 text pages. Single-column text. Printed by Virtue and Co., London. Both volumes are in VERY GOOD + condition. Both volumes have bright, clean exteriors with bright, unworn gilt on spines and just very slight wear at the spine ends. One small faint stain on front board of Vol. II and otherwise very little surface wear. Text opens wide in a few places in both volumes exposing the inner threading but text remains firmly bound, but in Vol. I one illustrated plate is loose but fully intact and one illustrated plate is torn at the bottom corner but with no loss to the illustration. Both volumes have bright, clean pages with no foxing or browning to the text or illustrated plates, which are all present. Previous owner's signature in fountain pen on front flyleaf of both volumes: "Martha B. Heath / From Father / July 2nd 1868.".

Synopsis

Nicholas Nickleby is left responsible for his mother and sister when his father dies. The novel follows his attempt to succeed in supporting them, despite his uncle Ralph's antagonistic lack of belief in him. It is one of Dickens' early comic novels.
