Wilmington, N.C.: Jackson & Bell, Steam Power Presses, 1892. First Edition First Printing . Soft cover. Good. Octavo. 15 pages. Soft cover bound in original tan printed wrappers. The binding shows some wear with chipping at the corners of the front cover. There is a water spot near the top corner of the front cover, and there is toning about the edges of the wrappers. Overall the condition is good, but this is a fragile item due to the quality of paper of the outer wrappers. The text is toned but sound and generally clean. Now housed in a removable plastic sleeve with a board backing. A scarce item. William Laurence Saunders (1835-1891) was a North Carolina lawyer, soldier, historian, and was purported the head of the "Invisible Empire" or KKK in North Carolina. In the Civil War he started in the Rowan Rifle Guards and served in both the 10th Regiment (1861) and as a commander in 46th Regiment by 1864. He was wounded three times at Fredericksburg (1862) and at the Wilderness Campaign. After the War he was suspected as a leader of the Invisible Empire in North Carolina, and in 1871 he was called before a Congressional Joint Select Committee where he was asked about activities of the Klan in NC. He answered by pleading the Fifth over 100 times with "I decline to answer." At this time he was the chief clerk of the state Senate. In 1872 he was an editor of the Wilmington Journal. Today he is most known for his work on compiling the first 10 volumes of the Colonial Records of North Carolina which were discovered and incomplete in the State Arsenal. He searched other state offices to fill in the gaps and eventually had people in England search for English records to fill in more lost records. The first 10 volumes of Colonial Records were published 1886-90. Alfred Waddell (1834-1912) was also a newspaper editor in Wilmington and was one of the chief instigators in the Wilmington Race Riots of 1898 through which he and his supporters staged a coup of the city government, resulting in his being placed in the mayor's office by his supporters. Scarce and historically important. Now housed in a removable plastic sleeve with a board backing. [Thornton 14306].
