Volume 1: – [5], VI - XV, [2], 2 - 389, [3] pages, preface by author and list of illustrations. Black-and-white illustrated frontispiece, with slightly browned and foxed tissue guard, showing the view of the The Vyverberg at The Hague. The text has another illustrations showing a portrait of Hugo Grotius. The book has been rebound in a brown coloured cloth with gilt coloured titles to the back strip. Volume 2: – [5], VI - VII, [2], 2 - 475, [23 – of which 20 a further titles for publishing house] pages, appendix and index. The book has been recovered in a brown coloured cloth with gilt coloured titles to the back strip. This double volume is the biography of Johan van Oldenbarnevelt, also known as John Of Barneveld, a Dutch statesman and Revolutionary who played an important role in the struggle for independence of Holland from the Hapsburg Castilian Empire. As already noted both volumes have been rebound in a brown coloured cloth; and, all of the end pages have also been replaced on the volumes. Volume 1: – a little rubbing of the book corners with cocking of the spine. Browning and faint foxing to the text block edges with age toning of the pages. The first few and last few pages of the book show a few handling marks. Previous owners''s sticker to the top edge of the front paste-down. Volume 2: – minor rubbing of the book corners and back strip corners. A slight cocking of the spine. Browning and slight foxing of the text block edges. There is a stain to the top left hand corner of the front text edge which has impinged on the top left hand corner of the pages to page 98. A couple of small tears to the front edge of the half title page. Original owners' sticker to the top edge of the front paste-down. Fading to both back strip. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
