The first edition of this work in the publisher's original cloth binding, with the original unclipped dust wrapper. In this fascinating study, Mark Girouard traces the evolution of the country house in England from the Middle Ages to the world of Evelyn Waugh and P. G. Wodehouse. This engaging account of the life of the landed gentry won the Duff Cooper Memorial Prize in 1978 and the WH Smith Literary Award of 1979. It is lavishly illustrated with over 250 plates, including 33 in colour. Mark Girouard (1931-2022) was an architectural historian and an authority on the country house. In the publisher's original cloth binding, with the original unclipped dust wrapper. Externally, cloth is in lovely, bright condition, with only very light bumping to the lower extremities. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright and clean. Dust wrapper is in excellent condition, with minimal edge wear to the upper extremities. Near Fine
