About This Item

Leningrad: Lenobizdat, 1932. 121 pp., 4 photographs. 22.2x15.4 cm. In original publisher's illustrated wrappers. Tears to the edges, 6 pages detached, ex-libris "From the Books of S. Polinvaksy" on the verso of the front wrapper. Otherwise in a good condition.

Scarce. First edition. Wrapper design by the Soviet artist A. Kanevsky. A RARE INSIGHT INTO THE LIFE OF POLITICAL CONVICTS BEFORE THE 1917 REVOLUTION.
Printed in 1932, this edition represents a collection of articles written by the former political convicts, who were exiled during the Tsarist regime in the Russian Empire. The collection was issued by the Leningrad branch of the "Society of Former Political Prisoners and Exiled Settlers", which was established in 1924 and was aimed at studying the history of the revolutionary movement, prison, hard labor, and exile in Russia. The edition, which was apparently published to commemorate the 15th anniversary of the October Revolution, contains 9 articles written by the members of the Society and dedicated to both the analysis of the pre/post-revolutionary environment in Russia and memoirs of the former victims of the Tsarist regime. In the texts, the authors describe economic hardships prevailing in the early 20th century Russia and offer vivid insights into the revolutionary movement and the state of prisons at the time. The edition includes interesting excerpts from the memoirs of former political prisoners, who meticulously describe inhumane conditions and treatment they had to experience during exile: the lack of medical assistance, constant beatings, murders, etc. The collection contains extremely rare black and white illustrations (including 4 separate sheets) showing the members of the Society and the life of the former convicts in prisons and during labor.
The articles were written by Trilisser, Lidak, Bniks, Shinder, Mil'chik, Piterets, etc.
