Boston / New York: Houghton Mifflin Company, 1919. Hardcover. Good+ (ex-library with labels and stamps on spine, block, inside front and rear covers and title page verso. Overall light shelfwear to boards and block. Light age toning to pages but text and illustrations are otherwise very clear. Volume 3 spine glue is loose with front cover and spine not attached.). Four volume set bound in green cloth with gilt spine lettering. Each volume has a color frontispiece portrait of John Marshall. Each volume is approx 550-650 pp with bw plates and portraits throughout. I. Frontiersman, soldier, lawmaker, 1755-1788. -- II. Politician, diplomatist, statesman, 1789-1801. -- III. Conflict and construction, 1800-1815. -- IV. The building of the nation, 1815-1835. "Works cited" at end of each volume.
