About This Item
??Charlestown or Boston: Printed for the Author, 1809. First (only). Good/Near Fine. A good copy of this exceedingly rare volume The subtitle essentially describes it completely John Southack was a Boston merchant who was sent to prison for scuttling a ship to commit insurance fraud Because of his observations in prison, he subsequently became important in the prison reform movement, primarily due to this book There are included at the end of the work several Massachusetts laws on prison laws of the time
Leather spine on marbled paper covered boards, with gilt title on a black leather label on spine Spine scuffed and boards scuffed and worn, but binding is still tight and sound Text has age darkening and light foxing throughout, but is otherwise unmarked and undamaged Encased now in an attractive custom-made mottled calf slip-case by Sangorski & Sutcliffe (see Photo) that protects the work completely The slip-case has a few tiny chip at edges There is the ink name and a nearly illegible inscription, presumably of an early owner on the rear endpaper, with the date of 1817 on the rear pastedown [Sabin 88222]
Being privately printed, there are not more than a handful of copies in private hands 119 pp.
