Decorated brown cloth hardcover with embossed title and gilt illustration on the front cover. Gilt illustration and title on the the spine. Light edge wear to the cloth extremities. A light crease to the cloth head of the spine. The front hinge is cracked. 1883 previous owner inscription written on the right front flyleaf. "D.G.Siegel" name in the upper corner of the front paste down. Rest of contents very clean. This copy has no illustration on page 441 and the titled illustration "St. Charles Hotel" on page 443.

Synopsis

Life on the Mississippi is a memoir by Mark Twain detailing his days as a steamboat pilot on the Mississippi River before and after the American Civil War. The book begins with a brief history of the river from its discovery by Hernando de Soto in 1542. It continues with anecdotes of Twain's training as a steamboat pilot, as the 'cub' of an experienced pilot. He describes, with great affection, the science of navigating the ever-changing Mississippi River.
