About This Item
"The Life and Public Services of Hon. ABRAHAM LINCOLN" - To Which is Added a Biographical Sketch of Hon. Hannibal Hamlin by D.W. Bartlett. 1860 1st edition, 2nd printing (1st hardcover edition following the 1st printing issued in paper wraps); Derby & Jackson; New York. The book features a frontispiece engraving of Lincoln after the "Cooper Institute portrait" photographed by Mathew Brady (it was this photograph of Lincoln that was put on campaign posters and small handheld cards that were mass produced and allowed voters to see the presidential candidate for the first time, aiding him in winning the election). Scarce, early campaign biography - "Authorized Edition" though, interestingly, the Lincoln campaign hadn't officially authorized any campaign biographies. There is a five-page publisher's catalog at the back. The contents are grouped as follows: Early History; In Congress; The Great Senatorial Contest; The Convention and its Nominations; Speeches.
Condition:
The lettering on the spine has faded. Tiny cloth tears at the cover corners. Tight binding with no cracks and no loose pages. The primary condition issue with the pages is that there is a gray-ish stain at the outer edge of the frontispiece, the title page, the tissue guard and the copyright page. Occasional light foxing. "Henry M. Crissy Long Ridge" written in pencil on a front end paper; "Crissey" written in red ink at the top-left corner of the front pastedown. Overall the book is in Good condition.
