The bindings are tight and square. Text clean, light even toning. Moderate shelf handling wear; minor bump to the lower text block of Volume 1 and 2. Some loss of sharpness of gilt on the spine. A complete set of Boswell's The Life of Samuel Johnson originally published in 1791.
James Boswell was a Scottish biographer, diarist, and lawyer born in Edinburgh. He is best known for his biography of his friend and older contemporary, the English writer Samuel Johnson, which is often said to be the greatest biography written in the English language.
Samuel Johnson (1709 - 1784) was an English writer, poet, playwright, essayist, critic, biographer, editor, and lexicographer, and The Oxford Dictionary of National Biography calls him "arguably the most distinguished man of letters in English history.

Howes only includes the 108-page version. This is the least common version of the life of Lewis Garrard Clarke (1812-1897), born into slavery in Kentucky. After escaping to Canada in 1841, Clarke was active in speaking against slavery and dictated his experience, presumably to J. C. Lovejoy (1805-1871), author of the Preface and abolitionist. In Good- Condition: lacking binding; loss and closed 2-cm. tear along fore-edge of frontispiece, without loss of image; upper corner of frontispiece creased and lightly soiled; minor loss at fore-edge of title page; foxing and small stains throughout; solid.
