Saint Francis Xavier, was a Spanish Catholic missionary and saint who co-founded the Society of Jesus and, as a representative of the Portuguese empire, led the first Christian mission to Japan. He led an extensive mission into Asia, mainly the Portuguese Empire in the East, and was influential in evangelization work, most notably in early modern India. he was also the first major Christian missionary to venture into Borneo, the Maluku Islands, Japan, and other areas. Pp.xvi/485, 2 full page engravings + engraved frontispiece folding map, small booksellers label (Knowles, Hyde Park) to inside front board, armorial bookplate of the Convent of the Immaculate Conception O.S.F. Bocking, Essex to inside front board, occasional minor spotting. Dark gree blind-stamped cloth, gilt title to spine, minor wear to top and tail of spine and bumps to corners. Scarce. G+.
