Richard Bentley, 1839. Hardcover. Good/No Jacket. Good ; No jackets. 1839 Richard Bentley, London. Four Volumes. NOT ex-library. Hardcovers, half-bound (spine, part of the boards, and corners) in brown leather with stamped borders over marbled paper. Red, orange, blue and white marbling is in antique straight pattern with large spots of orange color. Spine has five slightly raised bands with gilt geometric decorations. Title "Life & Times of Louis XIV" and author & volume number in gilt on black panels. Remaining panels have elaborate gilt floral devices and dotted borders. Top edges are dark brown. Gray endpapers. Black and white frontispieces and plates. Bindings tight and firm except for vol. 1, which is cracked at the front hinge and loosening, but overall is intact. Corners and spine ends bumped and rubbed, with boards exposed at some tips. Spine leather has some very light surface cracking, but no flaking; gilt worn in some places. Covers have moderate surface and edge wear, with some rubbing and peeling to the surface of the leather along exterior hinge lines, edge, and corners. Covers light to moderate rubbing to the marbled papers. Imprinted bookplate on front endpaper of each volume. One pair of facing pages has a darkened rectangle where something of low-quality paper was stored in vol. 3. Pages lightly and uniformly tanned but still supple. Very light foxing present primarily on the first and last few pages of vol. 1. Volume 1 also has some pencil notations on endpapers. Volume 2 has tissue guard on frontispiece; other volumes do not. A few pages in each volume have some brown smudges in margins. Pages otherwise clean and unmarked. 468 + 450 + 434 + 450 pages. No dust jacket, as issued. Printed by Samuel Bentley, Fleet Street. Carefully packed, shipped in a box.
