New York: P.M. Haverty, P.J. Kenedy, Excelsior Catholic Publishing House, 1856. Richard Robert Madden (1798-1886) was a medical doctor, an abolitionist, and an important historian on the United Irishmen and the Rebellion of 1798. Robert Emmet was executed by the British, but Thomas Addis was able to relocate to the United States, where he had a distinguished career as a jurist. This work was originally published in 1844 (Glasgow & Dublin) and with several reprintings after, this is a Very Good copy of the First American Edition. Blue decorative cloth binding, with floral motifs (oddly, a palm tree!) stamped in black; with the title in gilt; same format on the spine. Clean text; 328 pages, with four pages of publisher's adverts in the rear. There is spotting, heavier at the endpapers, less so throughout the text. Bumped corners, with rubbing at the crown and foot of the spine. There is a splash of what might be ink across the rear cover (nothing on the front). Still, a solid and very attractive…
