Additional decorative title-pages, wood-engraved frontispieces on papier de chine and some 800 illustrations (plates, head- and tailpieces, initials, vignettes) throught by Tony Johannot, inserted engraved folding map at rear of vol. II showing the route of Don Quixote's travels. [iv], 744; [iv], 758 pp., with half-titles. Contemporary half red morocco gilt and marbled boards; vol. II front joint cracked, some foxing throughout Translated into French and annotated by Louis Viardot. Ray commends this edition ("a wonder of Romantic bookmaking") for Johannot's illustrations highlighting the "sad profundity" of Don Quixote, whereas previous illustrators had made the knight a figure of ridicule.
