About This Item

British Broadcasting Corporation, 1956. First Edition. Jean Seaton, official historian of the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC): "[The Listener] was edited with a real eye, a testament to the power of the editor, intelligent and constructive and with a style driven by the urgency and topicality of the BBC, but about as real an insight into what the serious minds of the time were thinking about," she said. "At that time in the 1930s, The Listener was part of the immense ambition of the BBC to be part of British life, and early on established a tone more bohemian than the BBC."
THE GUARDIAN, 2011

Collection includes "I Believe in China' by the Rev. H.B. Rattenbury (15 March, 1945); 'The Menace to Free Journalism in America' by Mary McCarthy (15 May, 1953); 'The Age of the Universe' by C.A. Coulson (21 May, 1953); 'The Use and Misuse of Science' by the Archbishop of York (25 February, 1954); 'Bernard Shaw: a Personal Memory' by Esmé Percy (26 May, 1955); 'What is American Conservatism?' by Penegrine Worsthorne (5 January, 1956); and 'Thoughts on Refugees' by Gilbert Murray, O.M. (18 October, 1956). Quarto, 7 issues, original staple-bound illustrated wrappers, black & white illustrations throughout, age-toned, some covers detached, occassional chipping, a very good collection.
