Blue endpapers, uncut edges. Tissue-covered frontispiece portrait of Byrd opposite title page. Multiple photographic illustrations, four maps with two fold-out maps at rear. Faint soiling to white vellum spine. From a deluxe limited edition of 1000 signed copies, this is number Q4, signed by Richard Byrd and with "Presentation Copy" noted below the limitation. (Conrad 253) (Taurus 114) Includes a note to Admiral Byrd on Mayflower Hotel stationery, referencing the publisher, Melville Minton and asking for a personalized inscription in the book. Richard E. Byrd was an American naval officer and polar explorer. He was known for being the first explorer to reach the North Pole and South Pole by air, but those claims are disputed.
