Hand lettered text gives one the feeling that the book is correspondence meant just for the reader and Barbara Bader says of The Little Family: "The Littles are a model family saved from stuffiness by the prosaic sorts of things they do and the laconic matter-of-fact text. Similarly, what is chaste about the pictures is offset by their compact cheerfulness and certain small, light touches...as compositions, they have order, definition, above all equiposise; as illustrations, they come alive."
