London; Chatto and Windus, 1887., 1887. Hard Cover. FIRST EDITION. Octavo, pp [6], 319; [7], 4-331; [8], 303, [1], 32 catalogue. Recently rebound in full polished midnight blue calf with 5 raised bands, gilt titles to maroon labels & gilt ruling to spine, and gilt border to boards; matching marbled blue endpapers. Binding crisp and fresh. Ownership inscription of John Johnson to half-title of Vols I and II only; a little very minor scattered foxing, and leaves lightly toned. A Near Fine set. Fourteen stories including "Mrs Zant and the Ghost" and "Mr Percy and the Prophet", some with a supernatural theme and some with detective elements. All of the stories were first printed in periodicals on both sides of the Atlantic but are here collected in book form for the first time.
