About This Item

New York: Rand McNally & Company, (1928). Octavo, full-color illus. khaki cloth (hardcover), 102 pp. Fair, with with edgewear and former-owner signature, hairline tears along pages at lower hinge, light foxing (age darkened spotting). Stories included: Chops Goes to New York; Chops and the Magician; Chops in Hollywood. Color illustrations throughout. “Once upon a time, on a lonely farm in New Hampshire, there lived a mother pig and seven baby pigs -- four sisters and three brothers. The little sister pigs were named Porktricia, Sausagia, Lardia, and Baconia. The brothers were Hamie, Cops, and Squeals. Squeals was the smalles of all the piggy children. It was indeed the loneliest of farms. The nearest neighbor lived a mile away. Farmer Ramsey and his wife rather neglected this little pig family, so they had to live mostly on windfalls and acorns. Once a day the farmer threw them a few nubbins of corn, then by and by he became so stingy he stopped doing even that. This was all very well during the warm weather, but when cold days came it was extremely uncomfortable for them. Things grew worse and worse until at last one day Squeals came home to the pen, weeping bitterly. Mother Pig asked him what in the world was the matter. “Oh,” cried Squeals, “we are left all alone on the farm! Farmer Ramsey and his wife have gone to Florida. I heard them say there was a big land boom down there. What will ever become of us?” And he squealed so loudly his mother could hardly think. Chops, who was the largest of the piggies and who tried to help his mother look after his small brothers and sisters, led little Squeals away so that his mother could make plans for the future. First Mother Pig looked all around, hoping to find a way out. She tried to open the gate to the barnyard, but was unable to do so. Then she went to the place where she had often seen Squeals slip under the fence ,and found that by rooting out a little more dirt there would be room enough for all of them to crawl out. She called the piglets, and they left the barnyard to wander over the farm in search of food. Fortunately they found enough to last them for nearly a month. The time came, however, when the supply was almost gone. Only one clover bed remained. This, Mother Pig had been saving for the last... [First story ends with]: “That is perfectly true!” agreed the manager, who was unpacking the porecelain trough, “And that is something each of us must learn sooner or later. There is no such thing as luck. That which we call luck comes usually from honestly trying or from hard work. Sometimes a pleasing manner brings it -- always there is a reason. It is never ‘just luck.’” The next day Chops bought from the master of the big friendly dog, a plot of land thrity by forty fee. Then, with the hlep of the manager, he built the bungalow pen. When it was ready they had a great celebration to which all the animals of the neighboring farms were invited. When the feast was at its height the big friendly dog arose with great dignity and solemnly offered this toast -- “Here’s health, wealth, and happiness to the Little Pig Who Ate a Four-Leaf Clover.”
