About This Item
New York: D. Appleton and Company, 1896 First edition, first state, with the earliest state advertisements and laid paper endpapers. Publisher's tan buckram, lettered in black and red, decorated in black, red and gilt, orange top stain; original cream dust jacket with matching design. Fine with some offsetting to endpapers and light pencil mark to the last page of advertisements; dust jacket with toning to extremities, light edgewear, minor chipping to spine ends, front flap separated, crack to fold crease of rear flap, and minor repair to front spine hinge. Overall, a very attractive copy in its scarce dust jacket. Housed in a custom brick red slipcase and folding chemise. Williams and Starrett 10a. BAL 4076. The Little Regiment is a collection of short stories that includes "Three Miraculous Soldiers," "A Mystery of Heroism," "An Indiana Campaign," "A Gray Sleeve," and "The Veteran" in addition to the titular "A Little Regiment." Like his acclaimed The Red Badge of Courage (1895), these stories center around the American Civil War and accurately evoke the feel of a battlefield, despite the fact that Crane himself never experienced combat. . 1st Edition. Hard Cover. Near Fine/Dust Jacket Included.
