Boston: James R. Osgood and Company, 1885. First Edition. First printing, from the earliest Osgood issue. 12mo (19.5cm). In original chocolate brown cloth, stamped in gilt on spine with title and Osgood imprint; list of James' works facing title page; [iv], 255pp. Binding bright and clean, with some rubbing to head and tail; internally clean, with some central gatherings beginning to loosen, around Very Good.

The work first appeared serially in the Atlantic Monthly from 1883-84 under the title En Province, and was heavily revised for this first book edition. Though the edition is dated 1885, it was in fact first published by Osgood in September 1884. EDEL & LAURENCE A23a; BAL 10570.

Synopsis

A Little Tour in France is a book of travel writing by Henry James. Originally published under the title En Province in 1883–1884 as a serial in The Atlantic Monthly, the book recounts a six-week tour James made of many provincial towns in France, including Tours, Bourges, Nantes, Toulouse, Arles and several others. The first book publication was in 1884. A second, extensively revised edition was published in 1900.
