Minor wear to hinges and corners of all volumes, else very fine copies. First issue, first state of volume 1 (with "partaking his posterity" in line 3 on page 4; with "Milton" for "Butler" in the headline on Q8v and with pp. 143-44 repeated on L1); and first issue of vols. 2 and 3, having title-pp. without the oval vignettes.



The "Lives" (1781) are Johnson's most mature work, and are. "in fact, the greatest single body of literary biography and criticism in our language.
