London: F.C. & I. Rivington, 1820. Hardcover. Very good. 24mo (12.5 cm), pp. Vol 1: 528, Vol. 2: 532. Full leather with gilt spine titling. All edges gilt. Previous owner's name and 1832 date on inside front of volume 2. Hinges cracked but binding still solid, moderate edge wear. From the collection of Dr. William J. Kerr (1889-1965), professor and chair of the UCSF Department of Medicine and founder of the Gold-Headed Cane Society. Originally published in a 4-volume set in 1781, this 2-volume version is an attractive edition of Johnson's "greatest work" [Steinberg, S.H., ed. Cassell's Encyclopaedia of Literature, p. 1085]
