London: Charles Knight and Co., 1845. Hardcover. Very Good. 4to - over 9¾ - 12" tall. Quartos. [xvii], 516; [xii], 516 pages. Hardcovers bound in 20th century blue 3/4 calf leather with blue cloth-covered boards Elaborate gilt designs on the spines, which each have 2 lettering pieces (burgundy and red). Top edges gilt. The bindings show light rubbing and wear. Some wrinkling to the top corner of the front flyleaf of Volume I. There is a little foxing to the front and rear of each volume, but overall a sound clean set. Attractive shelf appearance. Illustrated with 15 full-page steel plate engravings (portraits). Volume I has 9 engraved portraits for 10 subjects (no portrait for Simson on page 467). Volume II has 6 portraits for 6 subjects. Volume I is dated 1845; Volume II is dated 1846.
