Spines replaced with originals overlaid. Corners worn, some wear to edges. Lower spine labels chipped off vols. 2 & 4 and some chipping to remaining labels. Rear free endpaper torn out in vol. I. Johnson's Lives contains the most important English poets up to and including his own time, featuring Abraham Cowley, John Milton, Thomas Otway, John Dryden, William Congrieve, Jonathon Swift, Alexander Pope, Thomas Gray and many more. Part biography and part literary criticism, the work of the opinionated Johnson still makes for good reading today.
