About This Item

New York: Little, Brown & Company, 2008. First Edition [Stated], First Printing [Stated]. Hardcover. Very good/Very good. xvii, [1], 525, [1] pages. Inscribed by the author on fep verso. Inscription reads To Eric--With thanks for all you've done for al the Feinsteins. Enjoy. Best Always, John Feinstein 6-11-08/ Color illustrations. Index. John Feinstein (born July 28, 1956) is an American sportswriter, author and sports commentator. Thomas Michael Glavine (born March 25, 1966) is an American baseball player. Glavine played for the Atlanta Braves and New York Mets. He was the MVP of the 1995 World Series. With 164 victories, Glavine earned the second highest number of wins as a pitcher in the National League, second only to teammate Greg Maddux's 176. He was a two-time Cy Young Award winner, and one of only 24 pitchers (and just 6 left-handers) in major league history to earn 300 career wins. In 2014 he was voted into the Baseball Hall of Fame. Michael Cole Mussina (born December 8, 1968), nicknamed Moose, is a former Major League Baseball right-handed starting pitcher. Mussina played for the Baltimore Orioles (1991-2000) and the New York Yankees (2001-2008). Mussina spent his entire career in the American League East, won at least 11 games in 17 consecutive seasons - an American League record - and recorded a career .638 winning percentage. A five-time All-Star and seven-time Gold Glove winner. Pitchers are at the heart of baseball. Each has the potential to make his team a winner or, very quickly, a loser. In the end, only those with both the arm and the heart and the ability to manage extraordinary stress will emerge as champions. John Feinstein looks into this complex side of the game through the events of one nerve-racking season and through the eyes of two great pitchers trying to perform at the highest possible level. Tom Glavine and Mike Mussina have seen it all in the Major Leagues, remarkable highs and heartbreaking lows. Both entered the 2007 season in search of individual milestones and one more shot at the World Series--Glavine with the Mets, Mussina a few miles away with the Yankees. They experienced very different seasons--one pitching for a team dealing with the pressure of trying to qualify for the World Series; the other with a legendary team, expected to be there every year. John Feinstein provides a true insider's look into the most scrutinized position--starting pitcher.
