Pasadena: Radiant Life Press. FINE book, FINE Grabau binding. 1st ed.. 1917 (1916cp). 1st edition. Hardcover. FINE book, in FINE John Grabau green morocco binding, inside a FINE slipcase. TEG. Inscribed & SIGNED by both James & Grabau. . BOOK'S SOLE FLAW, spine sunned to a rich brown. 5 raised spine ribs divide spine into 6 gilt edge ruled panels. Title & author in two panels, "1917" at bottom. Other 4 panels with star in each corner and single floral stem inside. All letters & decor in gilt. Gilt dentelles & turn ins. Each turn in corner with same floral stem & star pattern. Grabau signed the front bottom turn in. Same design on rear turn ins but with 1928 at rear bottom turn in. This the binding date and date of Grabau's inscription. James' signature undated. Back boards with two gilt ruled edges. Front outer edge gilt ruled. Inside these a set of 6 rules with starburst @ top & stylized initials GWJ at bottom. Ends & edges of boards with gilt arrows. Marbled pastedowns & slipcase. Slipcase also FINE. Grabau started his binding career with Roycroft under Louis Kinder and formed his own bindery in 1905. PBA Galleries 7/17/14 auction, "Roycroft Press from Awald's Buffalo, NY, library" had many Grabau lots. Inscriptions read: "I would live to radiate joy, peace, purity, brotherliness, helpfulness. George Wharton James" & "To my good friend and pupil Florence A Huck. Who does "Radiate" all that my friend James asks. With the best wishes for a happy birthday. March 28th 1928. John F Grabau 'Tah- do- dah' Buffalo". Under this Grabau inked a small Indian peace pipe. .
