31 decembre 188... Net mezzo del cammin di nostra vita... Au milieu du chemin de la vie... Ce vers, par lequel Dante commence la premiere cantate de La Divine Comedie, me vient a la pensee, ce soir, pour la centieme fois peut-etre. Mais c'est la premiere fois qu'il me touche. Avec quel interet je le repasse en esprit, et comme je le trouve serieux et plein! C'est qu'a ce coup j'en puis faire l'application a moi-meme. Je suis, a mon tour, au point ou fut Dante quand le vieux soleil marqua la premiere annee du XIVe siecle. Je suis au milieu du chemin de la vie, a supposer ce chemin egal pour tous et menant a la vieillesse. Mon Dieu! je savais, il y a vingt ans, qu'il faudrait en arriver la : je le savais, mais je ne le sentais pas. Je me souciais alors du milieu du chemin de la vie comme de la route de Chicago. Maintenant que j'ai gravi la cote, je retourne la tete pour embrasser d'un regard tout l'espace que j'ai traverse si vite, et le vers du poete florentin me remplit d'une telle reverie, que je passerais volontiers la nuit devant mon feu a soulever des fantomes. Les morts sont si legers, helas !
