London: Robert Wilkinson, 1825. First edition. Hardcover. Modern three quarter black calf and marbled boards. Near fine. 2 Vols. Unpaginated. 37 x 29.5 cm. Engraved titles and 205 plates, some double-page. Notable for a series of plates illustrating London's 'Ancient & Modern Theatres', including the Southwark Bear Garden, Bankside Globe and Theatre Royal Drury Lane. Herbert was an English librarian and antiquarian. In1828 he was elected librarian of the Guildhall Library, which had been recently reestablished by the Corporation of London. He prepared a second edition of the catalogue in 1840, and retired in 1845. He died, aged 80, on 18 November 1851. UPCOTT II, pp.897-904. Interior contents generally clean with some modest offsetting plates to text. Adhesions to inside front covers residue from bookplate removal. Three inch library blind stamp title page of both front covers. Raised bands, spines lettered in gilt.
