About This Item

Harmondsworth, Middlesex: Penguin, 1962. Small 8vo, hardback in original cloth and dust-wrapper. 296pp., b/w plates, plans, glossary, indices, addenda, blanks for notes. Two small tears to dust-wrapper and mild foxing to flaps. Fore-edges foxed. A good, tight copy. Early edition from celebrated Penguin 'Buildings of England' series. Pevsner, born in Germany, conceived and wrote 32 of these volumes, the first being published in 1951. Apart from much other influential work in publishing and in architecture, he is acclaimed for introducing the history of English architecture to a general audience, in the form of these guide-books. The text in later editions has been altered.
