About This Item
Random House, 1985. 1st Edition 2nd Printing. Hardcover. New/Very Good+. B&W era photo section. CONDITION: UNREAD, but not perfect, 1985 Random House hardcover & DJ (in mylar jacket), 1st edition, 2nd printing. The problem is basically the DJ - edge wear top edge with a strange tiny "chip" at front fold on the "faux" metallic paper. Bookstore embossed stamp. B&W era photo section. End pages are decorated with a map of Davis's flight plan. CONTENT: When Jefferson Davis and his cabinet fled Richmond during the closing days of the Confederacy, they sought to avoid capture and continue the war. Of course it was in vain. Davis and his family were captured. The Union warders treated him shabbily. The South saw him as a hero, a martyr for the Lost Cause. THE LONG SURRENDER contrasts two of history's most significant figures, Jefferson Davis and Robert E. Lee, and shows how profoundly their contrasting views of the New South affected modern American attitudes.
