Pan. 8vo., black boards with backstrip lettered in silver; together in the dust jacket featuring a holographic image of an elephant seal [?] and a dinosaur; pp. [vi], 7-191, [i]; a near-fine copy, slightly bumped to foot of spine, a couple of trivial spots to the upper edge; ink stamp '419' to the ffep; aside from very minor shelf-wear to jacket, fine. First edition, signed by the author, and dated in the year of publication. Loosely inserted is also a flyer from the signing at Forbidden Planet, London, on Saturday 1st December [1984]. The fourth book in the Hitch Hiker's series, the book marks a shift in tone from Adam's previously cynical depiction of modern technology. Adams had purportedly been taken to a computer fair, in which he became enamored with the first model of the Macintosh, and became one of the first people in the UK to own a Mac. "So long and thanks for all the fish" was the dolphin's final message as they departed Earth, just before it was destroyed to make way for a hyperspace bypass. . Near Fine. Synopsis
So Long, and Thanks for All the Fish is the fourth book of the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy series written by Douglas Adams. Its title is the message left by the dolphins when they departed Planet Earth just before it was demolished to make way for a hyperspatial express route, as described in The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.
