About This Item

Very Good copy, Signed by Mandela on 14 Dec 1994 on the half title page, see scans (and also signed beneath Mandela's inscription by his jailer on Robben Island - Christo Brand); very rare to find a Mandela inscription contemporaneous with publication. 14/12/94 is either the day before the publication or is the actual publication book launch date.
Impeccable provenance with letter of authenticity from Cecil Greenfield - the noted Mandela signature expert. It is highly recommended when buying a signed book or artwork by Mandela that you ensure it comes with a certificate authenticating the signature. Please refer to Cecil Greenfield's website (cecilgreenfield.com)for details as to his global standing in forensic document examination. "In February 1981 I passed the entrance examination of the American Association of Handwriting Analysts. In 1988 I qualified for professional membership to the World Association of Document Examiners; court qualified in 1990. Unfortunately the Association closed in 2003 after some 30 years. During its heyday it had some 500 members internationally and did some sterling work which included the re-publication (through Nelson-Hall Publishers/Chicago) of text books including "Questioned Documents" by Albert S Osborn (Second Edition) and "Suspect Documents – Their Scientific Examination" by Wilson R Harrison that were almost unobtainable. One of the Directors was Edna W Robertson who is the author of the book "Fundamentals of Document Examination". In June 1985 I qualified for membership of The International Association for Identification (USA); the Association, which was founded in 1915, has a membership in excess of 6000 members worldwide. I served as a member of their Standing Committee on Forensic Laboratory Analysis in 1991. I am a Founder Member of the South African Association of Forensic Document Examiners (created on 14th March 2008), a Professional Member of The Chartered Society of Forensic Sciences (UK); the Society has almost 3000 members in 60 countries."
The binding is square and tight, some scuffing to textblock and a red ink squiggle on the ffep and a few ink underlined sentences on page 472. Some fading to the SA flag on the spine of the d/w. Also on the half title beneath Mandela's inscription is a moving tribute (handwritten signed inscription) from Christo Brand, Mandela's jailer on Robben Island. I met Mr Brand at his home in Cape Town on 6 June 2019 and asked him to sign it - attached is my affidavit attesting to this. I am also including in the sale price Mr Brand's own book also inscribed by him to me - Mandela, My Prisoner, My Friend - St Martin's Press, New York, 2014, 1st ed, Fine, unread. Both books are offered as one lot, please note I ship with DHL couriers and price includes free courier. To own an authenticated signed copy of the autiobiography of the world's most famous political prisoner, along with that of his jailer on Robben Island, is a rare opportunity. Further scans available on request.

Synopsis

Nelson Mandela is one of the great moral and political leaders of our time: an international hero whose lifelong dedication to the fight against racial oppression in South Africa won him the Nobel Peace Prize and the presidency of his country. Since his triumphant release in 1990 from more than a quarter-century of imprisonment, Mandela has been at the center of the most compelling and inspiring political drama in the world. As president of the African National Congress and head of South Africa's antiapartheid movement, he was instrumental in moving the nation toward multiracial government and majority rule. He is revered everywhere as a vital force in the fight for human rights and racial equality. LONG WALK TO FREEDOM is his moving and exhilarating autobiography, destined to take its place among the finest memoirs of history's greatest figures. Here for the first time, Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela tells the extraordinary story of his life--an epic of struggle, setback, renewed hope, and ultimate triumph.
