About This Item
Reynal & Company, New York., 1958. First edition. Octavo. 314 pages. A semi-autobiographical novel of gambling and family disruption, set in the Depression years.Presentation copy from the author, inscribed by her on the front free endpaper: ''for Robert Payne. At last! Here's the sixth version of the book you believed in and so helped me keep on and on - with much affection - Sanora. Apr 26, 1958, Hollywood''. The recipient was a prolific writer largely in the fields of biography and history, although he also produced two novels. He had spent the war years in China and had interviewed Chairman Mao. Perhaps it was this, together with the fact that he was, as was Babb, married to a person of Chinese extraction, that led to the obvious friendship displayed in the inscription. Babb herself was a fascinating character. She had an affair with Ralph Ellison, was a friend of William Saroyan and was for quite a while a member of the U.S. Communist Party.Head and tail of spine a bit pushed. Very good in very good dustwrapper rubbed and slightly chipped at the edges.
